Founding Charter - The Safe Relationship Campaign
We believe that every child and young person should leave education with the knowledge, confidence and skills to build healthy relationships, recognise abusive behaviours and know where to seek help.
Healthy relationships are not instinctive—they are learned. Just as we teach children to read, write and stay physically safe, we believe they should also be taught how to stay emotionally and psychologically safe throughout their lives.
The Safe Relationship Campaign exists to make this a reality.

Our Mission
The Safe Relationship Campaign calls on the UK Government to strengthen relationship education by introducing a comprehensive, age-appropriate programme delivered throughout primary and secondary education.
We propose that this programme is delivered by trained Relationship Education Practitioners working alongside schools, ensuring children receive high-quality education without placing additional pressure on classroom teachers.
Our aim is simple: to prevent abuse before it begins by teaching children what healthy relationships look like.
Why This Matters
Domestic abuse rarely begins with physical violence. It often begins with behaviours that are misunderstood, normalised or overlooked, including coercive control, emotional abuse, manipulation, isolation, digital abuse, financial abuse, unhealthy jealousy and controlling behaviour.
Many adults only recognise these behaviours after experiencing harm.
We believe children should not have to learn these lessons through trauma.
Education has the power to change that.
Our Principles
The Safe Relationship Campaign is evidence-informed, safeguarding-focused, trauma-informed, age-appropriate, inclusive, practical, non-political and centred on prevention.
Our campaign is not about teaching children to fear relationships. It is about teaching them how to recognise healthy love, mutual respect, equality and safety.
What We Are Asking For
The Safe Relationship Campaign calls on the UK Government to strengthen statutory relationship education to include comprehensive teaching on healthy relationships and abusive behaviours.
We are calling for specialist Relationship Education Practitioners to deliver structured programmes in schools, with age-appropriate learning that develops from primary through to secondary education.
Young people should leave education with practical relationship skills, not simply awareness, and every child should have clear information about available support services and how to seek help safely.
Our Proposed Model
Rather than increasing the workload of teachers, schools would have access to trained Relationship Education Practitioners who deliver dedicated programmes tailored to each age group.
These programmes would include interactive learning through discussion, role play, storytelling, creative activities and real-life scenarios.
Each programme would end with a pupil-led Showcase of Learning, allowing children and young people to demonstrate what they have learned through presentations, artwork, performances, campaigns or other creative projects chosen by the school.
What Children Would Learn
Primary Education
Primary education would focus on kindness, respect, feelings, boundaries, trusted adults, friendships, recognising unsafe behaviour and knowing how to ask for help.
Secondary Education
Secondary education would build on these foundations by exploring healthy relationships, communication, consent, coercive control, emotional abuse, digital and financial abuse, conflict resolution and online safety.
Young people would learn how to recognise red and green flags, understand how to leave relationships safely, support friends and access appropriate support services.
Our Long-Term Vision
We believe future generations should never have to say:
“I wish someone had taught me what abuse looked like.”
Instead, we want every young person to leave school able to say:
“I know what respect looks like. I know my boundaries matter. I know how healthy relationships should feel. And I know where to go if something doesn’t feel right.”
That is the future The Safe Relationship Campaign exists to create.
